2011 Nashville, TN – Day 1

The girls typically have a long weekend in October.  We try to leverage these long weekends for a little R&R.  Three years ago, we went to Chicago on this weekend, 2 years ago it was Memphis, and last year we went to Florida.  Florida was an exception as we try to keep these trips to a reasonable distance achievable by a few hours car ride.  This year, it’s Nashville, TN.

We hit town by 10:30 and made our way straight to the Parthenon in Centennial Park near Vanderbilt University.  The girls have had this on their list since seeing it in the movie, Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief.  It’s a replica of the Greek Parthenon and has an enormous statue of the Greek Goddess Athena inside.  It was built for the 1897 Centennial Celebration in Nashville and is the only building from that event that remains.

We also toured the Belmont Mansion on the grounds of Belmont University.  This mansion dates back to before the Civil War and has many original items.  A nice young lady from the university was our tour guide.  Even Mackenzie enjoyed it.  =)  Our final stop was the Upper Room Chapel just north of Vanderbilt.  Here we took a 3-D carving of the last supper and a small museum.

We finally checked in to the Gaylord Opryland Hotel, where I took a nap while the girls explored the hotel.  A quick dinner, showers, and bed, and we’ll be ready for the Country Music Hall of Fame and music row tomorrow.

Here’s a link to the Flickr set.
