This is my own list of tech items that I’ve personally owned or used in 2008. It’s not scientific and it’s certainly not a comparison of everything on the technology market. Just one guy’s opinion, so take it for what it’s worth.
- Number 5 – Google. This year, I switched to Google for all of my email & RSS feed management. In the past, I’ve tried to keep track of a couple of different email addresses via Outlook on a PC. However, this move has enabled me to manage all of my email addresses and keep track of all of my RSS feeds from any internet connected device. As I wrote earlier this year, I’ve gone Google.
- Number 4 – Canon SD1100 IS Digital Elph. Last year, I acquired a DSLR from Canon (it’s a long story :)). But on the eve of our trip to New York City, I decided that I didn’t want to lug the Canon Rebel XTi and assorted lenses around the city and bought this little P&S camera. Wow! It takes great pictures, shoots video nicely, and fits in the palm of my hand. It even comes in fun colors; I have the pink one at my
daughters’ request. - Number 3 – ScotteVest. While it’s necessarily technology, it is “Technology Enabled Clothing”. I received the Fleece 5.0 for Christmas and I’m really digging it. Read my review here.
- Number 2 – WordPress. This is the platform that allows me to bring you this blog. I’ve really enjoyed blogging this year (over 90 posts in six
months). So much so, that I’ve begun to collaborate with a friend on a BBQ & Homebrew blog at http://www.grillandbarrel.com. If you’d like to try your hand at blogging, it’s really not difficult. Give it a shot at http://www.wordpress.com. It’s a pretty cool way to keep up with your friends & family, hobbies, or just get it off your chest!
- Number 1 – MacBook Pro. I acquired a MacBook Pro early in 2008 and I’ve gotta tell you that after making my living in IT for the past 18+ years, I’m excited about a computing platform for the first time in a long time. In fact, I’ll bet next year’s list includes an iMac! 🙂

Nice List!!
Well, as you know, I have followed you down this same path, mostly. You’ve hooked me on The Goog, I’ve been doing the li’l Canon for a while, Becky’s put a ScotteVest on my back, WordPress runs my world, and I’ve just joined the MacBook Pro crowd.
Scary just how close your list is to mine!
For me, the move to iPhone, and the acquisition of three other iPods, has been the biggest move for me in ’08… although Doc Oc is a close second. My iPhone has opened up virtually ubiquitous, independent access to the ‘net for anything I want, without the local flavor of Big Brother guiding my way. if I need to see gerbils and hamsters living together, or ritualistic sacrifice of tomatoes and potatoes in the cause of soup, then I can. Anywhere. That’s freedom.
